How Well Do You Know Your American History?
Dust off those thinking caps, and see how much you remember from those school days. I have posted five questions about general American history. How do you stack up against some of the other roses in our garden? Although I can't give away any prizes, I will announce the names of the smartest rose(s) on the yahoo loop. Come now, give it a try.
1. What was the single bloodiest day of the Civil War?
2. How many countries did the British fight during the American War of Independence?
3. On what hill did the Battle of Bunker Hill take place?
4. What was the first state to secede from the Union?
5. Did the U.S. ever attack Canada?
You can post your answers right as a comment to the blog.
Don't forget, it is American Rose month. Consider entering our Love, American Style Contest. And the historical chat this month will be on July 17. We will discuss research for the American Rose novel.

Oooh, I love historical questions. :) Must be the teacher in me.
1. The Battle of Antietam in 1862 was the bloodiest day of the Civil War.
2. I believe the British were fighting 4 different countries at that time if you count the colonists. American colonists, French, Spanish, and Dutch.
3. Bunker Hill actually took place on Breed's Hill.
4. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union.
5. Yes the US attacked Canada during the War of 1812.
That was fun. :)
OK, show off. :) I'm rusty on that bloodiest day of the Civil War, but was counting the same counties including ours on my fingers for those that fought England during the Revolution. I remember South Carolina seceded first from the movie, 'Glory!' The US also attacked Canada during the revolution to try and take it away from Great Britain and make it the fourteenth colony.
That's right, Beth, we did attack Canada during the Rev. Wasn't it Benedict Arnold leading that assault?
Here are my answers (I love Trivia!): 1. The Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862.
2. Besides the American colonists, the British were fighting France, Spain, the Netherlands, and also the ruler of Mysore in India.
3. Breed's Hill, the name was later changed to Bunker Hill.
4. South Carolina was the first state to secede.
5. The US tried to invade Canada in 1775 and 1776 and failed both times.(Yes, Arnold led and was wounded, too.)
I'm a Canadian, but I'm a Civil War nut, so here goes nothing:
1. Antieitam, Sept. 17, 1862
2. The Brits were fighting in India, and against the French (when weren't they), the Spanish, the Dutch and the American colonists
3. Breed's Hill, Massachusettes
4. South Carolina (I think it was December 20, 1860)
5. Yes, twice! In 1812 and don't forget about the Finnian Raids after the Civil War!
How'd I do?
Am finishing my Civil War novel as we speak, so that fired me up even more. Thanks!
